Alabama's Kalen DeBoer reveals his 'real intentions' for Crimson Tide players

Winning is everything at Alabama, and Nick Saban made sure of that.

The tough part for new head coach Kalen DeBoer is that he inherited a program in which the expectations are championship or bust. He proved to be a good coach at Washington, where he took the Huskies to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, but his first year in Tuscaloosa was a relative disappointment.

Anywhere else, a 9-4 season in year one of a new regime is pretty darn good. At Alabama, that's borderline unacceptable.

That's the pressure DeBoer is coaching under, and that's not even to mention the pressure of inheriting a roster with many players he did not specifically recruit.

DeBoer recently revealed to Greg McElroy on the "Always College Football" show that his relationship with Alabama's players has grown as a result of time, which is natural.

He's also trying to make sure that everything he does comes with a specific intention in mind.

“You know, the real intentions are for them to be the best they can be,” DeBoer said (h/t On3). “Bring value to who they are as a football player, as a person, and that is nothing about them personally. It’s about what we’re trying to do together to help everyone reach the goals that they have individually and we have collectively."

Time builds trust, but so does consistency. Alabama may not have reached its goals in year one of the DeBoer era, but if he has been consistent with his message to the players, that's another way to encourage growth within a program.

Still, the fact remains that anything short of CFP contention is going to be seen as a disappointment for DeBoer, so the pressure will be on in Tuscaloosa.

He'd better have his players in his corner, because he's going to need them to compete hard for him in 2025.

Anonymous SEC football coach reveals Alabama's biggest concern in 2025

One year into replacing college football’s most accomplished head coach, Kalen DeBoer led Alabama to a 9-4 record, missed out on the playoff, and lost to a subpar Michigan team in the bowl game. Now he faces one major hurdle as he looks to rebound from that debut, according to an anonymous SEC football coach. “The biggest question will be quarterback, obviously,” an SEC coach said to Athlon Sports. “But they have a really solid offensive line, and the roster doesn’t have any obvious holes to fill. They’re going to compete for a playoff spot, for sure.” They better, if DeBoer wants to avoid kicking off some early speculation about his job security, but how he and new co-offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb address the Jalen Milroe-sized hole in their offense will be critical. Milroe’s departure leaves Alabama with a dilemma as to who will lead its offense, although former five-star prospect Ty Simpson emerged as the heir apparent this offseason, earning some high praise from Grubb, in particular. Simpson would be the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback if they played a game today, Grubb revealed after spring football was complete. Although he added: “It wasn’t perfect this spring, but I thought we were trending the right way the entire time.” Simpson was a near-consensus five-star prospect in 2022, considered the No. 2 quarterback and No. 25 overall player, according to an average of the four national recruiting services. The quarterback was also named the No. 2 player from the state of Tennessee. But Simpson isn’t the only option Alabama has to look at. Austin Mack, a transfer from DeBoer’s program at Washington, and incoming five-star freshman Keelon Russell are also pushing for QB1 consideration. Russell was the No. 2 overall prospect, second-ranked quarterback, and top player from the state of Texas, per an average of the national recruiting rankings. For the moment, it seems Simpson has the seniority to occupy the top of Alabama’s leaderboard, but whoever takes the reins will be under enormous pressure. Going 9-4 isn’t going to be tolerated at Alabama for very long. “The expectations define this place,” another SEC coach said. “I think you’ll see a competitive program that could end up in Atlanta and make the playoff, but this is a new era. Bama’s not a surefire lock every season.” (Athlon) -- Read

Browns' Joe Flacco doesn’t hold back about Shedeur Sanders' presence

Veteran NFL quarterback Joe Flacco is still looking to make waves. Having turned 40 years old in January, Flacco believes he can still do it at the top level, as he signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns in the offseason with clear expectations to be the team’s No. 1 quarterback. While Flacco is currently widely considered the Browns’ QB1, there is still competition for him in the offseason from his much younger teammates. The Browns selected two quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft in Dillon Gabriel of the Oregon Ducks and Shedeur Sanders of the Colorado Buffaloes. There is also Kenny Pickett, who comes over to Cleveland following his trade from the Philadelphia Eagles. Flacco loves the presence of Sanders amid Cleveland Browns' offseason It’s been a while since Flacco, who won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens, last was in a QB competition. Not since his second year in high school, to be exact, per Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN. Nevertheless, he appears to love his time alongside his much younger QB teammates amid the battle for the QB1 role. "Shedeur has been great. I mean, he’s a lot of fun to be around in those meeting rooms," Flacco said. "I think so far, there’s been at least once in the meeting room that he’s made me crack a smile, and that’s what it’s all about. You know, he’s a young guy trying to learn some football and come out here and practice well and do those things. And like I said, he’s been a lot of fun. I probably wasn’t too far away from playing against his dad, and now I’m playing with him." In the 2024 NFL season, Flacco played eight games with the Indianapolis Colts, passing for 1,761 yards and 12 touchdowns with seven interceptions.

Yankees make troubling Jasson Domínguez announcement

New York Yankees fans should have been nervous the second that manager Aaron Boone said he wasn't concerned about Jasson Domínguez's thumb injury. Nervousness might be turning into panicking, as the Yankees' lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cleveland Guardians lacks the talented young outfielder. Domínguez suffered a left thumb contusion stealing second base in Sunday's 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Domínguez did not play against the Guardians on Tuesday. Cody Bellinger shifted over to left field, and Trent Grisham took over in center field. Boone is repeating that outfield alignment on Wednesday night. Domínguez has endured an inconsistent first full season, hitting .247 with six homers, 25 RBI and a .765 OPS over 191 plate appearances. Three of those six home runs came in a road victory over the Athletics last month. Boone said the Yankees consider Domínguez to be day-to-day. It remains unclear if the Yankees would consider an injured list stint ahead of this weekend's series against the Boston Red Sox. Regardless, the Yankees are playing short-handed, and they're in deep trouble if another outfielder gets hurt. Utilityman Oswaldo Cabrera is likely out for the season with a severe ankle injury, and Giancarlo Stanton remains on the injured list. Although Jazz Chisholm Jr. played the outfield while with the Miami Marlins, he's typically only played second and third since joining the Yankees last summer. Chisholm started at third base and went 2-for-3 with a home run in his first game off the IL.

The 'Most recent 4,000-yard passer by NFL franchise' quiz

Sam Darnold may have played his way into a big paycheck this offseason by leading the Vikings to 14 wins and throwing for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns. But with two disastrous showings in the most important games of the year, he also played his way back into chatter about eventually getting benched. Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike MacDonald said (for the summer at least), that idea is out of the question. “You guys are crazy,” he said when asked if Darnold could lose his spot to Joe Milton at any point before the 2025 season starts. “I respect that you’ve got to ask it, but it’s just a crazy question. It’s just not going to happen. Sam’s our starting quarterback.” Which brings us to today’s quiz. Darnold had by far the best year of his career with the Vikings in 2024, earning his first Pro Bowl appearance thanks to career-bests in essentially every passing category. With that being said, can you name the last quarterback to throw for at least 4,000 yards in a season for each NFL franchise? Good luck! Did you like this quiz?
