At this time of the year, it is typical for holidaymakers to enjoy warm weather in many parts of the country, but for tourists in Majorca and Menorca temperatures are expected to only reach a maximum of 20 degrees while the storm is in force.

Alcudia, Palma and the Canary Islands are also set to be affected by the bad weather sweeping across the region, and while Tenerife has seen sunny weather this week, it is expected there will be heavy rainfall on the island this weekend.

The bad weather is due to a low-pressure system coming in from the Atlantic, in addition to a cold air mass moving across the Iberian Peninsula, according to RSVPLive.

At this time of year the average temperatures in Spain usually range from 19 degrees to 24 degrees, so the drop in warmth may not go unnoticed by some tourists.

The news of the forecast weather follows reports of the Canary Islands being plunged into darkness for over two hours yesterday.

At 9.47am local time thousands of people experienced a blackout, but by midday, Javier Llamas, the mayor of the town of Aridane, had confirmed "more than half of the power outage had already been restored," while speaking on a local radio station.

An estimated 30,000 people were said to be affected by the power outage, with local media suggesting there was a "fault" at the Los Guinchos power plant.

The incident came only a week after Spain, Portugal, Andorra and parts of France experienced a major power cut.
