The Wiwi Jury — our in-house team of music unprofessionals — is reviewing and rating the 37 competing songs in Eurovision 2024. Next we review Switzerland, who have chosen Nemo with “The Code”.

Has Nemo cracked the code to win us over? Read on to find out!

Nemo – “The Code” (Switzerland Eurovision 2024)

Review: Nemo – “The Code”

Antranig: I thought this was the winner of Eurovision 2024 as soon as I heard it. Lyrically beautiful, musically dynamic and visually stimulating, “The Code” has all the ingredients to take the crown. I love the way this song straddles different genres, building itself its own, completely unique identity, rather than being shoehorned into a box it doesn’t fit in. This is exactly what Eurovision is all about! Oh, and let me just say that “Somewhere between the 0s and 1s, that’s where I found my kingdom come” might just be one of the best lines ever at Eurovision.

Score: 8.5

Pablo: Rap, drum & bass, space opera, emotional introspection… it should be a recipe for chaos, but Switzerland have connected all of those elements into one of the strongest packages of the year. A bit of Chemical Brothers, a bit of Woodkid, a bit of Diva Plavalaguna, “The Code” is a bombastic, in-your-face display of talent, but never feeling like too much, which keeps you coming back for more. This is the kind of risk that should be rewarded, and if it all connects live onstage, Nemo will end up with a strong case for why the victory should be theirs.

Score: 10

Lucy: During the premiere of this, I ran upstairs and almost interrupted my husband’s meeting. The second it finished, I made him come downstairs and listen, because I’d just heard what I’m still sure is the winner of Eurovision 2024. “The Code” is spectacular musically, taking us through various genres flawlessly, with one of the most charismatic performers of the year. But also the meaning is displayed so beautifully, where many people listening to it may be learning about non-binary people for the first time and appreciating its meaning. The sheer talent of Nemo is so impactful and aids this more. Well done, Switzerland. Zürich 2025, anyone?

Score: 10

Tom: A pop hook, rap, opera, and a hint of drum & bass — a cocktail of genres blended perfectly. It’s matched with an incredible voice that will give anyone a run for their money. This is a song that has everything, and I am expecting something epic on stage in Malmö — it’s the performance I am most looking forward to seeing. This could win.

Score: 8.5

SWITZERLAND – They said that this year they aren’t sending ”a man with a ballad” to ESC. Turns out, they were telling the truth. Nemo is non-binary, and The Code is… a bit of everything.  Going out of the box is the key aspect here. Both the lyrics and the musical styles used are telling us not to conform if we aren’t comfortable with it. Nemo not conforming with the concept of gender is what the song is primarily about, but the words used are quite clever, so that much more people can find themselves represented.  It can be about… Read more »

As I do embrace the creative and musical merrits of the Swiss entry by Nemo. In the official vid they were absolutely Breaking the Code in my taste. Wonderfull. Watching some of their live at the pre-parties online I was confident that they could pull this of. As the song is a mix of different styles. Nemo proved he can deliver. That being said it also grew down on me. I prefer more the rap parts, these are full of high energy and the voice is good on it. In the opera-parts its too shouty and shrill in my ears… Read more »

Great voice. Original. Such an interesting retro vibe from Switzerland also this year. But this is not a hit song. Unlikely people remember o hook or chorus. Let’s be realistic.

The song is ok. But unfortunatelly, it is not about the song it is all about a selective gender (?!?!) of an utterly confused individual whose appearence is just disgusting. It’s the 10th anniversary so I guess we have to go for another Eurovision GENDER Contest. The songs are irrelevant!!! Sorry for all the other mentally non confused (not to use the term “normal”) musicians.

I listen to this song, and I don’t want to listen to it again, so I don’t know why it’s your favorite? Is mixing several genres and appearing non binary to impress people enough to win Eurovision in 2024? It’s Ridiculous 4/10

Pure cringe… I see the Wiwi team usually votes based on hype/peer pressure but there’s no way people in the real world will find this self-centered, messy song endearing and worthy of votes, especially if the artist decides to wear a tutu on stage. All this hype seems so inorganic.

I just can’t wait to see it on stage in Malmo. Nemo is coming to Eurovision to leave a mark, not only to win. The first non-binary person to win Eurovision. It sounds like another ground-breaking moment after Conchita Wurst in 2014.

I wasn’t sure to start with but now I love it. It may be it has less immediate impact with the viewers though than some. You can easily see it 1st or 2nd with the juries and 3rd or 4th with the public.

Reaction from the crowd can influence the voting public and Croatia may be more an instant crowd pleaser.

Predict a 4 way tie between Switzerland, Croatia, Netherlands and Italy like in 1969.

Norway may be seriously be underestimated in the odds, too.

ps. I’m not from Norway by the way.

5th place – Switzerland (personal ranking) I’m a person who ALWAYS loves Switzerland in Eurovision. They always send such good songs, I root for them every year. This year though, I was so surprised when I heard the song. It hit me right it the face and I enjoyed it from the very first listen. Yes, it is very chaotic since it mixes lots of genres, but somehow it still works and sounds good. We have to admit Nemo’s vocals live are insane! They sing so well, it blew my mind off. Imagine how cool it would be in Malmö..… Read more »

No, I’m not feeling. It is impressive in terms of vocals and the mashup of genres sounds interesting but this one shouldn’t be the winner. Switzerland deserved to win more with “Tout L’universe” that with this one. I don’t know, too many fireworks around it. It is too much visually and vocally. It’s not bad by any means, though, I can find some positive aspects in it. 7/10 1.     Lithuania (8,75/10) 2.     Czechia (8.25/10) 3.     Ireland (8/10) 4.     Spain (7.75/10) 5.     Norway (7.5/10) 6.     Ukraine (7.5/10) 7.     Belgium (7.25/10) 8.     San Marino (7.25/10) 9.     The Netherlands (7.25/10) 10.  Sweden (7.25/10) 11.  Switzerland (7/10) 12.  Poland (7/10) 13.  Austria (7/10) 14.  United Kingdom (7/10) 15.  France… Read more »

Switzerland is my winner for ESC 2024. My technical notes on this song haven’t changed much since it was first released. Here are those notes: Verse 1: F minor, descending chromatic scale. Pre-Chorus 1: Theatrical hits. Mozart Magic Flute element. Chorus 1: Fusion. Piano theme to dance beat, then merging into R&B and rap. Lovely chords here. Verse 2: Rapping verse. Ascending chromatic scale and shifting harmonies to match. Pre-Chorus 2: Added lyrical melody, to Mozart again. Chorus 2: The core “dance” part of the song. Extended Bridge: This sounds like blues/jazz to me. Melodic break: Wow, Fmin9! One of… Read more »

I love the lyrics of his song but I like to see their meaning much deeper than just geneder identity, basically I see this song as getting out of dualistic perception of artificial robotic 0-1 binary system of judgment into a non-dualistic so out of any judgment, beyond the good and bad. Because eventually wrong or right, good and bad are just labels and one”s truth is unique and beyond the judgment. So I see it as a spiritual message, like presence of consciousness beyond the 0-1 mind.

I can’t see it as a winner. It’s just too much. It’s pop, opera, rap, trance. We had that before and it didn’t end very well even when the fans thought differently before the night.

We have lots of “risky” entries this year so maybe song like “before the party is over” has a higher change to win. It’s hard to predict
