Jeep Boss Mike Manley confirmed that the new Wrangler will be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain in 2020. And now, in a recent conversation with Detroit Free Press, Manley hinted towards the development of an all-new model specifically for the Chinese market. The SUV in question is likely the Grand Commander, which was previewed as the Yuntu concept earlier this year. The model is expected to debut at the Beijing Auto Show and it could be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. The company could also offer an eco-friendly variant sometime in the future.

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler was unveiled at the LA Auto Show, after which Manley confirmed its plug-in hybrid version. So far, no specifics are available about the hybrid SUV. It is, however, expected to share some components with Fiat Chrysler’s only plug-in hybrid, a fuel-efficient variant of the Chrysler Pacifica.

Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrid has been confirmed for the US market and there is so far no word if the plug-in hybrid SUV will make its way to India. However, considering the government’s ambitious plan to have India go all-electric by 2032, it makes sense for a brand to invest in the country. Besides the government plan to electrify cars in India, the other aspect to pay attention to is Jeep has a serious focus on India as a growing market.

According to Manley, the plug-in hybrid Wrangler could be just the tip of the iceberg. “Our approach is always to bring that technology to bear on the markets when we see the markets develop and demand begins to grow, and that clearly is beginning to happen so in the Jeep lineup you will see electrification in the coming years,” he said.

India bound 2018 Jeep Wrangler will likely get the upcoming 3.0-litre diesel V6 although power figures are yet to be revealed. Internationally, a turbo petrol 2-litre and a 3.6-litre V6 petrol are on offer as well.

In terms of design, Jeep has tried to stay as much as to the original as possible while giving it a fresh outlook. The new Jeep is actually based on a completely new platform that is not only lighter but is even better suited to off-road use than the outgoing Wrangler.
