China Auto Exhibition Sees More Energy Vehicles

Plenty of new energy vehicles were put on display at this year’s Beijing International Automotive Exhibition with a total of 174 vehicles showcased, taking up a much higher percentage of displays than last year.

With the number of new energy vehicles climbing, the range and endurance of these vehicles has also improved significantly, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.

According to the Jiangxi Hanteng Automobile Corporation, a Chinese auto brand, their vehicles can run at least 400 kilometers on one charge.

China's new breed of car brands like Weltmeister, Nio and Byton all have their electric cars at the exhibition.

“The four models can be manufactured on a large scale. They are not just vision cars," said Shen Hui, founder of Weltmeister.

To satisfy the booming market for electric cars, many luxury brands like Bentley are also eying developing their own products.

"For the luxury car industry, this is a milestone because it is a major breakthrough," said Pan Qing, Global Board of Management of Jaguar Land Rover.

China encourages clean energy vehicles as they can ease pressure caused by energy shortages, as well as contributing to a better environment. The government provides supporting polices to both developers and buyers. In the first three months of 2018, the sale of electric cars surged by over 150 percent.

In 2018, China made out new subsidy plans to encourage higher range and lower energy consumption in electric cars. At the same time, the subsidies to lower ranged models were cut or removed.

"We believe the new policy of a 'double merit-based system' is quite appropriate, and comes at the right time. The policy will encourage companies to focus on technology innovation and pay more attention and efforts towards environmental protection," said Liao Xionghui, Vice President of Hanteng Autos.

China has been the world's biggest new energy vehicle market for three consecutive years. The electric car developers are not satisfied with only selling products, but want to lead the industry and set worldwide industry standards.

"If we set the standard, then we can have a greater say in the market. That will lead to our products being seen across the world, especially as we master core technologies and core competitiveness. This is the passport for our electric cars to the world," said Yu Kai, Secretary of the Party Committee of China

Automotive Technology and Research Center Co. Ltd.

The Beijing International Automotive Exhibition or Auto China has been held biennially since 1990 and is one of leading motor shows in China.
