Every year, thousands of migrants embark on perilous journeys through Mexico, hoping to reach the United States in search of a better life. But behind this mass migration lies a dark and dangerous– reality: the smuggling of migrants in trailer trucks, a practice that often ends in tragedy. A collaborative investigation by a cross-border team of journalists has shed light on the deadly routes taken by these migrants, revealing the extent of their suffering and the challenges they face along the way.

Over the course of seven months, investigative journalists from Latin America, Europe, and the United States worked tirelessly to compile a comprehensive database documenting the journeys of nearly 19,000 migrants through Mexico. Drawing on public records, news coverage, and reports from advocacy groups, the team mapped out the routes taken by cargo vehicles transporting migrants, from the southern border with Guatemala to the northern border with Texas.

The data, covering the years 2018 to 2023, offers a glimpse into the harrowing conditions faced by migrants as they travel in overcrowded and unsafe trucks, often enduring scorching temperatures and lack of ventilation. The investigation uncovered at least 111 deaths and hundreds of injuries, highlighting the grave risks involved in migrant smuggling.

Led by Noticias Telemundo and the Latin American Center for Investigative Journalism (CLIP), in collaboration with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and Bellingcat, the investigation involved media partners from across the region, including Pie de Página, Chiapas Paralelo, En un 2×3 Tamaulipas, Plaza Pública, and Contracorriente.

Despite the challenges faced by journalists in gathering data on migrant smuggling, the investigation provides valuable insights into the scale and impact of this clandestine trade. By meticulously documenting each event and cross-checking information, the team has created a comprehensive record of migrant journeys through Mexico.

The data reveals that migrants from Central America, the Caribbean, South Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa are among those who undertake these perilous journeys. While the majority of migrants are from countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, others come from far-flung regions in search of refuge and opportunity.

The investigation also identified different types of vehicles used in migrant smuggling, including smaller box trucks, wooden slat trucks known as “tortón,” and trailer trucks. By categorizing these vehicles and mapping the events, the team provides a detailed picture of how migrants are transported across the country.

Transparency and accuracy were paramount throughout the investigation, with journalists carefully documenting their methodology and publishing the database for public scrutiny. By sharing their findings, the team hopes to raise awareness of the dangers faced by migrants and advocate for greater protections for those undertaking these perilous journeys.

As the number of migrants heading for the US through Mexico continues to rise, the need for comprehensive data and investigative reporting becomes increasingly urgent. By shedding light on the realities of migrant smuggling, journalists play a crucial role in exposing human rights abuses and holding those responsible to account.

In the face of adversity and danger, migrants continue to brave the journey in search of a better future. Their resilience and determination serve as a reminder of the enduring human spirit in the face of adversity. As we confront the challenges of migrant smuggling, let us not forget the individuals behind the statistics and work together to ensure their safety and well-being.
